Sophia DeRuvo is a local Austin artist and classically trained cellist, with experience in jazz ensemble and orchestral musicianship. Her solo improvisation work is experimental and has classical and contemporary influence. She began studying cello at the age of 7. She studied for ten years the Suzuki method. She was part of the Austin Waldorf School orchestra and choir in her youth, later to be in orchestra, jazz ensemble, and advanced choir. She then attended the Chicago Art Institute studying painting and sound. Her teaching method incorporates Suzuki classical musicianship with contemporary improvisational methods.
